About Merry Z. Ruan, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Merry Ruan is a board-certified ophthalmologist and glaucoma specialist. Born and raised in Shanghai, China, her academic journey reflects excellence across multiple disciplines. Dr. Ruan earned her PhD in Molecular and Human Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She subsequently completed her medical degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York City. She pursued her general surgery internship and ophthalmology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a glaucoma fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Ruan has made significant contributions to the fields of ophthalmology and genetics through her research. She has authored more than 30 publications in leading scientific journals, addressing topics such as gene therapy for inherited retinal disorders, glaucoma management, and advances in ocular imaging. Her work has been presented at prominent national and international conferences, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). In recognition of her achievements, Dr. Ruan has received several honors, including the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Travel Grant and the Milton B. Rosenbluth Foundation Award.
Dr. Ruan is pleased to return to Houston, Texas, which she considers her second hometown. She looks forward to bringing her expertise and dedication to advancing patient care to the community she holds dear.
