About Caroline M. Schmidt, M.D.
Dr. Caroline Schmidt was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. She attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Next, Dr. Schmidt earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, MI. She stayed in Ann Arbor to complete her Internship at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She then moved to Houston to complete her Ophthalmology residency at the Baylor College of Medicine's Cullen Eye Institute. Following residency, she stayed at Baylor College of Medicine to complete a Glaucoma fellowship, specializing in cataract and glaucoma surgery.
During her training, Dr. Schmidt received the Resident Excellence Award from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons for her research in patients who had undergone both cornea and glaucoma surgery. She also received the Goar Award from Baylor College of Medicine for her research in cataract surgical outcomes. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Glaucoma Society. She is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Although Dr. Schmidt thought she was moving to Houston on a temporary basis for her medical training in 2012, she was lucky enough to meet (and subsequently marry) a wonderful Houstonian who convinced her to stay in Houston permanently. She has genuinely enjoyed caring for glaucoma and cataract patients in Houston for the past several years. She takes pride in educating patients about their disease and helping them understand all treatment options that are available. She promotes individualized care for her patients because there is no such thing as a "one size fits all" treatment for glaucoma.
Dr. Schmidt specializes the medical and surgical management of glaucoma, including:
- traditional filtering surgeries (trabeculectomy and tube shunt)
- newer minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (including goniotomy, canaloplasty, and iStent)
- non-invasive glaucoma laser procedures (selective laser trabeculoplasty, peripheral iridotomy, and cyclophotocoagulation with Micropulse P3 laser and diode laser).
Dr. Schmidt also specializes in cataract surgery, including:
- implantation of premium intraocular lenses and
- femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery.
