Houston native Dr. Alex Villarreal brings world-class ophthalmology expertise home after completing his prestigious Wake Forest residency. Dr. Villarreal's journey into ophthalmology began with fascination for the eye—such a small structure that plays an enormous role in how we experience the world. What drew him to this specialty is the ability to make direct, meaningful impact on quality of life, often with immediate results. His particular passion lies in cataract surgery and advanced laser procedures, where he combines technical skill with meticulous attention to detail, staying at the forefront of surgical advances.

His unconventional path included working construction during Texas A&M summers, building character and the work ethic that now serves him in delicate eye surgery. Six months studying abroad in Costa Rica broadened his global perspective, while volunteer work performing cataract surgery in Honduras reinforced his belief in accessible eye care for all—particularly meaningful experiences that enhance his patient care today.

Dr. Villarreal is excited to join Houston Eye Associates, contributing to excellent, patient-centered care while utilizing the latest surgical and laser technologies. Most importantly, he's eager to form long-term relationships with patients in his hometown community. When not perfecting surgical techniques, he's passionate about fitness and exploring Houston's incredible food scene.
