Dr. Salmonsen was born and raised in New England, graduated from Yale and came to Texas in 1964 to attend Baylor College of Medicine. After an internship at Methodist Hospital in Houston, he served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army from 1969 until 1971. Returning to Houston, he completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Subsequent subspecialty training in ocular tumors was performed at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He then returned to Houston and completed a fellowship in retinal disease at the University of Texas prior to starting practice in 1975. He is a faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas in Houston and is also an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Having lived on the Connecticut coast, small boats and fishing have always played a big role in his life. While in school, he played basketball, baseball, swam competitively and was on the track team. He still exercises regularly and has run the NY marathon and skied the Birkebiner, a 50-km cross-country ski marathon in Wisconsin.
