Dr. Michael Bloome was born and raised in Chicago, attended the University of Illinois and in 1967 graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. After completing an internship at the University of Iowa, he then did a four-year residency at the internationally acclaimed Ophthalmology Department of the University of Iowa. Following his residency and Board Certification, he served as a major in the Air Force where he was head of the Ophthalmology Department at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. Dr. Bloome moved to Houston in 1974 and completed a fellowship in retinal surgery at the University of Texas prior to starting his practice with the Houston Eye Associates in 1975.
Dr. Bloome has been an active teacher in ophthalmology at the local, national, and international level. He is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas. He was head of the retinal section for the basic Science Course and Board of Review Course for over twenty years. Residents and practitioners from all over the country attend these courses yearly. At the national and international level, he serves on several American Academy of Ophthalmology Committees, teaches instruction courses at their annual meeting, and has been awarded the prestigious Honor and Senior Honor Awards by the Academy. He is a past President and current Emeritus Board Member of the largest organization of vitreoretinal surgeons in the world – the Vitreous Society. He has also been an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology for 23 years. Dr. Bloome is the author of several books, numerous slide-scripts for ophthalmologists, hundreds of presentations and over 100 publications. He has also been an investigator in several national research projects involving the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.
His wife, Susan, is an attorney specializing in family and juvenile law. They have three children. Their daughter is a nurse with a degree in Chinese medicine. One son is an orthopedic surgeon and the other is an attorney.
