Dr. Ann Ulmer Stout was born in Houston in 1959 and raised as a third generation Houstonian. She attended Wellesley College where she graduated with Honors in Biology. Dr. Stout returned to Houston for her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine where she was elected a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. After a medical internship at St. Luke’s Hospital, she completed her Ophthalmology Residency at Baylor, serving her last year as Chief Resident.

In 1990, following a year of practice in Houston, Dr. Stout moved to Los Angeles to do a two-year pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Southern California Medical School. She was invited to stay on as faculty and did so for 10 years. In 2000, she moved to Portland Oregon to join the ophthalmology department at Oregon Health and Science University, where she attained the rank of associate professor, While there, she was active in teaching residents and fellows, starting a strabismus clinic at the Veterans Hospital, as well as taking part in clinical trials on amblyopia, nasolacrimal duct obstruction and infantile cataract treatment. Dr. Stout has been an invited lecturer for ophthalmologists and pediatricians and has presented at national medical meetings.

In 2014, Dr. Stout returned to Houston to practice pediatric ophthalmology with Houston Eye Associates. She was drawn by the opportunity to focus primarily on patient care and to be close to family members and her roots.

Dr. Stout is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group.

Dr. Stout’s practice at this time is focused on pediatric and adult strabismus, diplopia management, and amblyopic and general pediatric eye care. She believes that the better a patient understands their own eye problems; the better they are able to collaborate with her to achieve the best possible outcome.

Outside of work, Dr. Stout enjoys spending time with her family, which includes her husband, Dr. Tim Stout, and 3 children. She has been involved in community service including scouting and medical mission work, and enjoys biking, running, and sailing. Dr. Stout is very happy to be back in Houston and able to reconnect with the community that helped launch her.

Dr. Stout sees patients at our Gramercy and Tanglewood locations.
