Carlos Gonzales M.D.
Dr. Carlos A. Gonzales was born in 1953 in Sterling, Illinois. His family, originally from South Texas, returned to the Rio Grande Valley that same year. He was raised in San Benito and Harlingen, Texas. In 1969, his family moved to Madera, California, where he completed high school. In 1972, he attended Stanford University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. He received his medical degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He completed a surgical internship at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and went on to complete a residency in emergency medicine in Los Angeles. He practiced emergency medicine six years before returning to the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. In Houston, he completed a residency in Ophthalmology and a Fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
Dr. Gonzales is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has been a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1996. He is also a member of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
His professional interests include pediatric and adult strabismus, pediatric anterior segment disease, developmental cataracts, pediatric keratorefractive surgery, and eye diseases of the newborn, including retinopathy of prematurity. Dr. Gonzales and his wife, Dr. Hortencia Luna-Gonzales, live in West University Place and have four children. His primary interests outside the clinic include baseball, fishing, golf, and gardening.
