Belu Allam M.D.
Dr. Allam joined Houston Eye Associates in 2007, after 19 years of private practice in the North Houston area. She is a general ophthalmologist and surgeon. Dr. Allam regularly performs cataract surgery, laser cosmetic and corrective eyelid surgeries, Botox cosmetic injections and laser treatments for glaucoma. A video of her ptosis surgery, for drooping eyelids in adults, was accepted for presentation at the annual session of the Texas Medical Association in Houston and was presented at the O'Brien Research Fellowship annual meeting at Tulane University.
Dr. Allam is board certified in ophthalmology. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Houston Ophthalmological Society, the Harris County Medical Society, and the Texas Medical Association.
Dr. Allam was born in Nagpur, India in 1954, where she graduated high school with honors at age 14 and where she moved on to receive her B.S. in biology from the Institute of Science in 1971 and her medical degree from Government Medical College in 1975. She completed her rotating internship and residency in ophthalmology at Government Medical College, followed by a masters in ophthalmology from Nagpur University in 1979. She then served as an instructor of ophthalmology at Government Medical College until immigrating to the U.S. in 1981. In 1983, she began her career in ophthalmology in the U.S. as a research fellow in cornea and external disease at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, followed by an internship in internal medicine and residency in ophthalmology at Tulane. While at Tulane, Dr. Allam performed research and authored several publications on glaucoma and corneal diseases.
Dr. Allam and her husband, Mohan, have two children and one grandaughter. Their son, Dr. Anand Allam, is on faculty at UT medical school in Houston, TX and practices Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PMR) at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hopital in Houston, TX. Their daugher, Dr. Arti Allam Thangudu, is specializing in edocrinology at UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA.
Dr. Allam loves to travel. In her travels to India, she volunteered at Desai Eye Hospital in Pune, teaching other ophthalmologists small incision, no-stitch cataract surgery. In her spare time, Dr. Allam also enjoys reading, listening to Indian Classical music and cooking for family and friends.
